About Me LIGHT SPECTRA by Marcela Römer A spectrum is intimately related to an anima lost in a limbo that is not very well defined, apart from possessing a certain halo of fear in the popular imagination.What appears as a forceful reality is the physical body exist in relation to its energy body; both are a part of an indisputable unit that balances being here in a place that can become one of dreams, or of intense realities.Lili(ana) is multifaceted in her manners of addressing contemporary art issues. Her means for indicating what motivates her include installation, sculpture, photography and video.For a contemporary artist, the means used to express her ideas matters less than the concept of her imagery in itself.Light is the basis of our vision; without it nothing of that which today presents itself to us as the artistic world, would be able to fascinate us. From times immemorial, the corporeal construction of an object, or thing, is by means of light. It is because of light that we see, or believe that we see. Temporality is on innumerable occasions timeless, and this implies that any given event at a given moment in time - seems to be happening in an implicit now, which may not turn out to be the same today. Jacques Derrida has written on this topic in his famous book Marx's spectra, commenting: and to understand history, that is to say, the event of the event, must one ignore its virtuality? .Derrida in these writings clearly refers to a political and ideological topic; in Lili(ana)´s case the art event resides concisely in what one knows that one does not know about oneself or things that happen.When the ace of light penetrates into a time-space it constructs a reality; not all these realities are the unique existing contexts. To apprehend a context, or situation, requires a high level of conceptual and dialectic perception. If light is generally defined as radiating electromagnetic energy that the human eye can perceive, it is thus that we can distinguish a set of electromagnetic waves that any given substance - for example a sculpture, a painting or a table - may emit or absorb. This electromagnetic perception focuses us on a verified observation produced by the effect of the luminescence. This possibility of perceiving light is an infinite effect, limited only by our capacity as human beings for concrete and definite vision. To see is to perceive, is to have the capacity to appreciate the effects of light. It is hence, and from this concept, that the artist investigates substantially. Lili(ana) tries to reflect in imagery - static or dynamic - what the light finds in its way.The point is that light not only finds isolated facts that reflect themselves in imagery; it also articulates situations of parallel worlds, or investigates self-producing effects.The human body is made up of perceptible live matter, and of a layer of energy, that together form what is generally known as being. The energetic layer that moves, constructs and intersects with the physical body is visible to the trained eye. Whoever wishes to learn to see it can do so after a series of learning. That layer of energy reflects sparkles of what we generally know as light, even though the exact clarification on it is, in reality, more complex than this. Both objects and living beings reflect, or produce, changeable luminosities. This is what the impressionists, and earlier artists, studied in order to be able to understand and translate into imagery that which is difficult to capture as an idea.Lili(ana) is a mental artist, which is to say that she constructs her thoughts primarily in the sense of the concept; the concept move her images. First her thought cements the image, and only then does she reveal a glimpse of it. Maybe this is what every artist does, the difference is that in some this general pattern is more accentuated than in others. When an artist is very mental, it is often said in the art world, there is the risk that their work become too ´spoken or explained´, something that does not apply to Lili(ana). If the image of her work is perceived - without ever having read any explanation of the same - what one sees is the pregnancy of light referring to the substance of art.As Derrida wrote in the above-mentioned text, it is not necessary for an event to ignore its virtuality in order to constitute itself as such. If light is light, why not glimpse it in order that evrybody can distinguish it and take it with them. If light allows us to construct fictional scenarios that let realities to happen, why not turn the gaze to that which it sets up for us as its own space. This is essentially what the artist examines in her series of photographs of light. The photograph captures the act of containing a pristine and transitory essence; it constructs and questions reconstructing the spaces of visibility.Art is often an act of faith, like a compulsion to imagine what we have to do at the specific moment that we have to conceive it. The idea is like that faith in what will become art. Light is like that which we know will be, and that which we imagine that happens.Lili(ana)´s photos of light, part of her project entitled Beyond this visible world, speak of her sense impressions in themselves; these can be of buildings, persons, objects or situations. They are themselves in the act of speaking.What it can be seeing, or can not, is what must be there to be seen, not another thing that is not. What is - even though this sounds extremely tautological - is what could not be otherwise. The artist investigates, searches, wonders, questions, believes her own answers: makes herself an artist.She constructs situations, presents them, investigates them. She sees that when she sees what she is seeing; that which is seeing is a sense of thirdness. And not because the third is the number three in the scale from the first towards that which is no longer important, no. It is a horizontal thirdness, where the third is in the same line that the first, the fifth or the tenth. It is one more step from duality to the immeasurable. To reflect this immeasurability of the luminescence in ideas is what she does. She shows in order that others may see, she only shows.Miami, July, 2009*

...on using the camera

"Light is essential to the notions of the visible and invisible...", Scott McLeodBeyond this visible world has being one of my art-contemplation and exploration since 2001. In my search I have found hard to explain or to express the vastness of this immeasurable topic. Nevertheless, photography has been the perfect expression to encompass a glimpse of its immensity with a click. Touching the untouchable is a sort of what I experience when photographing. It is one of the mediums that I use to get nearer to the experience that the impressionist where trying to grasp. I try to access the inaccessible, that which lives in the realm of light, inside and outside matter, in between matter I try to penetrate those timeless realities that co-exist with ours, places with infinite possibilities where the past, the present and the future simply co-exist. Light thru the camera gives me the opportunity to explore these realities, not only that of the past, present, future, but the possible future, the never-to-be future, the possible past that awaits a specific cause to unfold or the mere creations of our mind.Darkness transforms itself into light, it is part of it, it enhances it, it contains it, holds me, invites me to trust, to let (and) go Light is the way for Healing, to Beauty, to Truth, to Self ... click
